Position Summary: SUNY Geneseo announces a full-time employment opportunity and seeks applications for an environmental health and safety (EH&S) specialist to join the Environmental Health and Safety office. The successful candidate will have the necessary skills to assist and support the continuous improvement of all EH&S programs, including but not limited to those necessary to maintain compliance with regulatory standards and permits such as RCRA, HAZWOPER, universal waste, indoor air quality, laboratory and radiation safety, ergonomics, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, PBS and fire safety, job hazard assessments/PPE. Duties:
Maintains files and EHS records. Modifies and implements compliance tracking programs, recordkeeping systems and reporting.
Performs, evaluates, make recommendations and provides written reports on EHS inspections identifying required and appropriate corrective actions and immediately eliminating hazards that may pose a risk to life and safety.
Works directly with all departments to achieve EHS compliance.
Performs training and maintains EHS training programs and recordkeeping.
Coordinates and directly supports annual NYS Fire Inspection and ensures timely abatement of findings.
Organizes and supports required fire extinguisher and AED inspections, testing and recordkeeping. Oversees student workers to accomplish these tasks. Maintains fire device/system equipment inventory.
Supports emergency preparedness programs and may respond to emergency situations during or after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns. (e.g. chemical, asbestos, fire)
Performs review of injuries and perform occasional accident investigations of employee and student injuries involving chemical spills, confined spaces, protective equipment, and chemical hygiene, mechanical, electrical or other incidents involving EHS matters.
Supervises the hazardous and universal waste programs. Safely collects, prepares/packages, records and labels universal and hazardous waste.
Performs hazard assessments and assists in determining personal protective equipment including ergonomic and indoor air quality assessments.
Maintains electronic SDS database and chemical and needle syringe inventories.
Assist in the development of technical documents including EHS procedures, programs and guidance documents. Assist EHS director with website maintenance.
Purchase equipment and supplies in support of EHS programs. May interface with vendors to suggest appropriate equipment to on-campus stakeholders.
Serves as a leader and technical resource.
Establishes and maintains effective relationships and works cooperatively with departmental personal to achieve EHS compliance.
Perform and record periodic building inspections for EHS compliance.
Participate in various committees as assigned.
Perform lab audits with lab safety committee and document findings. Assist with timely abatement of findings.
Required Qualifications Bachelors degree and proven experience in environmental health and safety. Computer skills to work with software applications as well as Word, Excel, and Power Point. NYS Driver license (or the ability to obtain one upon hire). Knowledge and experience interpreting one or more of the following regulations: EPA/DEC/OSHA/PESH/DOL. Experience in developing and facilitating training. Must be highly organized. Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to respond appropriately in sometime stressful situations. Must be able to work and communicate effectively with individuals from a wide variety of diverse backgrounds. Must have a record of dependability and strong performance.
Preferred Qualifications Bachelors degree in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science or Environmental Health and Safety, or related degree.
At least 5 years experience in environmental health and safety.
Knowledge of NYS building and fire codes.
Ability to read schematics and blueprints.
Professional experience in an academic environment.
