The Histopathology Shared Resource is a College of American Pathologists (CAP) and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) accredited core facility that provides investigators with histology services critical for the progress of biomedical research. Additionally, we provide investigators with consultation and education in regard to best use of histopathology services. The HSR provides an array of pathology related services in support of basic, translational and clinical research at OHSU.
The purpose of this position is to provide management and leadership direction as well as technical support for the Histopathology Shared Resource (HSR). The incumbent works cooperatively with supervisors and medical directors attached to the Knight Diagnostic Laboratories (KDL), management staff of the Knight Biolibrary, Surgical and Clinical Pathology at OHSU, researchers, and manages the assets of the HSR. The incumbent is responsible for running laboratory operations at high standards consistent with all quality policies and to meet all accreditation requirements.
Specifically, we have identified key areas of responsibilities related to the medium and long-term growth plans of the HSR that need to be fulfilled by the incumbent: Responsibility for staff management and increasing staff; overseeing implementation of new technology; interacting with research clients to discuss projects, work timetables, rates and advice on best use of resources; reviewing and generating usage data for financial and scientific reviews.

Operational Management: Manage day-to-day operation of the HSR Laboratory including scheduling, troubleshooting, hiring and disciplinary action, quality metrics and training. Communicate effectively with fellow employees/customers as well as model excellent written and personal communication skills through listening, maintaining a positive and helpful attitude and ensure staff are also trained and competent in these skills.
Financial Resource Management: Continually assess opportunities for increased productivity and efficiency.Manage inventory, capital budgeting, and selecting/purchasing new equipment.
Human Resource Management: Manage hiring of employees who demonstrate understanding of organizational culture and job-specific duties. Provide continuous feedback, encouragement and coaching and addresses employee performance problems.
Quality and Regulatory Management Maintains all laboratory operations at high standards consistent with all policies to meet all accreditation requirements and regulatory agency standards. Maintains personal professional certification and current knowledge of technological and management applications that apply to areas of responsibility.
Technical Proficiencies: Perform duties in support of the Histopathology Shared Resource: Cutting microtome sections from FFPE tissue; Processing and embedding tissue; Preparing cryostat sections; Performing deparaffinization and staining runs; Database entry for work orders; Performs Special Stains for pathology. Establish and develop new immunohistochemical assays: Epitope retrieval steps; Tittering of antibodies to achieve optimal dilutions; Running proper positive and negative controls; Working with appropriate secondary detection reagents; Working with and developing skills associated with automated staining modules, such as the Ventana Discovery platform; Developing new skills, e.g. Nanostring; Interfacing with Core Facility customers.
Bachelors Degree (4 yr) with major courses in field of research and 1 to 3 years of relevant experience
1-3 years of experience in histology and Immunohistochemistry
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks at one time
Must have excellent communication, analytical and organizational skills: both written and verbal
Ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving problems
Must be proficient with computers running Windows and PC applications e.g. MS Excel, Oracle, Access, Word and PowerPoint)
Must have demonstrated excellent customer service skills both on the phone and in person
Must possess energy and drive to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously
Ability to use tact and diplomacy to maintain effective working relationships
A Bachelor's degree in Biology/ Molecular Biology/Medical Technology is preferred
HT/HTL (ASCP) certification in histology
